Schools support schools: Microscopes for modern biology classes

We extend our heartfelt gratidude to the Swiss Olympic Sports School/Stiftung Sport-Gymnasium (SSGD) in Davos. Its principals have decided to donate eight monocular microscopes to four rural schools in Cambodia.

A monocular microscope is simple, robust, and perfect for introducing primary-school pupils to hands-on observation. You can realistically and safely observe prepared slides, such as epidermis (big, clear cells), leaf cross sections, pollen grains, insect wings and legs. Young learners can furthermore look at everyday objects, such as salt and sugar crystals, paper fibres from different kinds of paper, textiles (natural vs. synthetic), hair (human or animal), feathers. Finally, they will be able to observe standing pond water containing algae, protozoa or tiny crustaceans (Daphnia).

Says Oum Sokun Thea, biology teacher at Svay Thom Primary School: “Dear Swiss Olympic Sports School Davos, dear Kamboo Project. We sincerely thank you for the generous donation of two microscopes to our school. Your kind support greatly contributes to improving science education and inspiring our students’ learning.”

We also thank our volunteer Martin Forderkunz who organised packaging, transport and delivery of the precious goods from Davos to the Prasat Bakong.
