Mobility of learners
What do bicycles have to do with school education?
A lot.
We are KAMBOO PROJECT and want to help the people of Cambodia.
Initial situation:
What do bicycles have to do with school education?
A lot.
Getting to school in Cambodia is often difficult. Public transportation is not available everywhere, especially not outside the cities. It is not uncommon for the route to determine how many days a child can come to school, whether they come at all, and indeed whether they start school at all!
Against this background, the bicycle is an important and efficient tool for a Cambodian child: by cycling to and from school, the children have more energy and free time for learning. The bicycle offers more safety for learners than if they have to walk from home in rural areas.
But owning and maintaining a bicycle is a luxury for most families with children, especially in rural areas where the nearest elementary school is usually miles away.
Student Somnang says:
“Having a bike makes my life much easier. I didn’t have to get up so much in the morning and I was so tired in the evening when I got home from school. I also didn’t have mud on my feet in the monsoon season! I have more time to help my mother with her daily chores, for example cleaning the house in the morning and opening the store.”
Implementation
Our selection criteria for teachers
- 1. children with disabilities (physical impairment)
- 2. children who live more than 4 km away from the school
- 3. poor children (parents are holders of a pauper's card)
- 4. children living under difficult circumstances (violent domestic family, divorce of one parent, children separated from one parent due to work restrictions).
- 5. children who are about to drop out of school and need help with transportation
Monitoring and evaluation
Monitoring and evaluation are integrated into the program implementation. Monthly reports over the following six months show how the result of the bike delivery is reflected in more regular attendance at lessons. All schoolgirls who have received a bike since 2019 are monitored by project staff and all improvements are recorded.
